Fall feels like a fresh start. It’s the perfect time to plan your next trip. Many travelers want more than a poolside chair but less than a bootcamp. The good news? An active vacation doesn’t have to be exhausting. You can balance movement with relaxation (and make room for croissant calories).

1. Embrace the E-Bike
E-bikes are a secret weapon for an active vacation. They give you a boost when you need it. They also let you coast while soaking in the views. Couples or families with different abilities can ride together at their own pace.
Personal Note: My husband is what cyclists call a hammerhead. He pushes his limits—even on vacation. Me? I’d rather balance workouts with spa time or the hotel pool. Trips like these let both of us enjoy the same itinerary in different ways. He rides hard. I ride light, then sip wine in the shade. We still meet at the same café with great stories to share.

2. Choose a Dolce Tempo Itinerary
Recently, Backroads Active Tour Company designed Dolce Tempo trips for easygoing travelers. These itineraries are built around all e-bike rides—so you’ll always have a little extra help on the hills. Think of it as an “easygoing adventure” where you enjoy the scenery, stop for photos, and never feel rushed.
The best part? They’re designed for mixed groups. One traveler might love pedaling harder, while another uses the motor assist more often. Both finish together, smiling, with plenty of energy left for an afternoon wine tasting. Dolce Tempo makes an active vacation possible for couples, friends, or families who don’t share the same enthusiasm—or ability—for cycling.

3. Mix in Multi-Adventures
Active vacations aren’t only about biking. Many itineraries include hikes, walking tours, cooking classes, or wine tastings. This variety keeps trips exciting. It also gives each traveler the chance to choose experiences they love. One might ride through vineyards. Another might roll pasta with a local chef. Everyone connects through shared memories.

4. Take Breaks Without Missing Out
You don’t have to do everything. Flexible itineraries allow half-day breaks or full days off. You can skip a morning ride and still rejoin the group later. Couples or families with mixed enthusiasm for biking find this option especially helpful.
An active vacation works for everyone—not just athletes. They’re perfect for couples or families with different goals or abilities. Each traveler gets what they need. Everyone returns with unforgettable shared experiences.
Soon, I’ll be biking through Champagne and Alsace. My plan? Ride some mornings, then trade my helmet for a glass of bubbly. Because travel should feel good—body, mind, and spirit. And yes, that includes a buttery croissant (or two).
nterested in learning more about active (or semi-active 😉) travel? I’d love to chat with you. I’ve joined active trips in Southern Italy, Portugal, Croatia, the French Riviera, and—next week—Champagne and Alsace. Want to know what it’s really like? Grab a spot on my calendar here.
