Amsterdam should be more than a quick stopover before your river or ocean cruise. Its world-class sights and hotels deserve a few days. I recently visited four of the best luxury hotels in Amsterdam for cruise travelers. Each offers a very different experience before your sailing begins.
Which Luxury Hotel in Amsterdam Is Right for You?
The best hotel before your cruise isn’t necessarily the one closest to your ship. If you’re staying three nights, choose a hotel that fits your travel style.
All four hotels offer exceptionally good and personalized service. However, their locations, atmosphere, dining, and overall experiences feel quite different.
My quick take? Choose De L’Europe for central luxury, Amstel for old-world grandeur, Pulitzer for character, and The Dylan for intimacy.

De L’Europe Amsterdam: Best for First-Time Visitors
I especially like De L’Europe for first-time visitors who want everything close at hand. Its exceptionally central location makes exploring Amsterdam easy. You can walk to many major sights, restaurants, and shopping areas.
Rooms feel spacious, and many offer beautiful water views. The hotel also offers several excellent dining options. Outdoor waterfront seating gives you another wonderful way to enjoy the setting.
The Heineken family owns De L’Europe, adding an interesting connection to Amsterdam. Freddy’s Bar celebrates that history in a sophisticated setting. For older first-time visitors, this hotel checks an impressive number of boxes.
Best for: First-time visitors who value a central location, spacious rooms, excellent dining, and classic five-star luxury.
Amstel Hotel: Best for Grand European Glamour

The Amstel feels like the beginning of a grand European voyage. This historic hotel sits along the Amstel River and offers plenty of old-world glamour. It has welcomed guests since the 19th century.
Rooms feel exceptionally spacious, which can be wonderful before or after a cruise. The hotel itself invites you to settle in and relax. You don’t need to leave each morning with a packed sightseeing schedule.
The tradeoff is location. Many central sights require transportation or a walk of around 15 to 20 minutes. I prefer Amstel for travelers who value comfort and grandeur over being in the middle of everything.
Best for: Travelers who want large rooms, traditional European luxury, and a quieter experience before their cruise.

Pulitzer Amsterdam: Best for a True Sense of Amsterdam
Pulitzer brings together historic canal houses around a central courtyard. The result feels artsy, comfortable, and unmistakably Amsterdam. Rooms differ throughout the property, giving the hotel plenty of personality.
The courtyard creates a lovely retreat from the activity outside. Pulitzer Garden offers outdoor dining when the weather cooperates. Jansz. provides another excellent option without leaving the hotel.
I like Pulitzer for travelers who want character without sacrificing a central location. Step outside, and you immediately feel part of Amsterdam. The hotel itself also gives you a strong sense of place.
Best for: Travelers who value design, character, location, and the experience of staying within Amsterdam’s historic canal houses.

The Dylan Amsterdam: Best for Intimate Luxury
The Dylan feels less like a large luxury hotel and more like a sophisticated private home. It’s cozy, polished, and intimate. That smaller scale allows the service to become especially personal.
My family spent four nights at The Dylan, so I’ve experienced that service firsthand. By our first breakfast, the staff knew us by name. They also remembered our preferences without needing to ask again.
The hotel takes food seriously, which makes it especially appealing to culinary travelers. The overall experience feels quiet and refined rather than grand. I recommend it for travelers who value intimacy and personal attention.
Best for: Couples and travelers who want sophisticated boutique luxury, excellent food, and highly personalized service.
Ask Your Hotel About a Private Canal Cruise
These luxury hotels in Amsterdam can help arrange more bespoke canal experiences than a typical tourist cruise. This works especially well if you prefer something private or personalized.
You can arrange your canal experience before arrival or ask the concierge once you’re at the hotel. They can match the experience to your interests and schedule.
I especially like a canal cruise for your first afternoon in Amsterdam. It requires little energy after an overnight flight. You’ll also get a wonderful introduction to the city while your room becomes ready.

Should You Stay Near the Amsterdam Cruise Terminal?
If you’re arriving the night before your cruise, staying near the terminal can certainly be convenient. However, I recommend giving Amsterdam three nights whenever your schedule allows.
With several days in Amsterdam, I wouldn’t choose your hotel based on the cruise terminal. Choose the location and hotel experience you actually want. Then arrange transportation to your ship on embarkation day.
Amsterdam deserves to become part of your vacation. Your choice among hotels in Amsterdam can shape that experience. Choose the property that suits you rather than simply the closest option.
My Cheat Sheet to Choosing a Hotel in Amsterdam
Choose De L’Europe if this is your first visit and you want an exceptionally central location. You’ll get convenience, spacious accommodations, excellent dining, and traditional five-star service.
Choose Amstel if you picture your European vacation beginning with old-world grandeur. Choose Pulitzer if you want historic Amsterdam with an artistic personality.
Choose The Dylan if intimate service and a private-home atmosphere appeal to you most. There isn’t one winner among these hotels. There is simply a better fit for different travelers.

Your hotel is only one piece of the trip. The right pre-cruise stay makes Amsterdam another destination instead of simply your embarkation point.
