Should you book a private guide in Paris or join a small group tour? I get asked this a lot, and honestly, my answer is pretty simple. If you’re going to be inside a museum, that’s when I would splurge on a private guide. For food tours, and really any walking tour, a small group is perfect.

Inside a Museum? I splurge for a Private Guide in Paris (or elsewhere)
A private tour in a museum is so intimate. You can really interact with your guide, you can actually hear them, and you can get up close to the artwork and talk about it while you’re standing right in front of it. Once you have a group of even six to twelve people, it gets a lot harder to have that back-and-forth conversation, get close to the art, and talk about it at the same time. So for the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and Versailles, I always book a private guide.
I was reminded of this again just this fall. I planned a trip to Amsterdam and Paris for my parents and my sister, who are very into Van Gogh, and I ended up going along to help with the logistics. I’ve honestly never been much of a Van Gogh person, but I went with them to the Van Gogh Museum and the Musée d’Orsay, and we had a private guide at each one.
Our guide in Amsterdam had a background in art conservation, so she told us all about what was underneath some of the paintings, what had been done to them over the years, and how they’re being conserved now. Our guide at the Orsay, where we focused on the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, was all about the gossip. She had all these little stories about who was cheating on whom, and those juicy details made the whole thing come alive.
They were completely different styles, and both were wonderful. By the end, they had won me over to Van Gogh, which I really didn’t expect. I don’t think that would have happened if I’d been standing at the back of a group trying to hear.

For Food and Walking Tours? I love a Small Group
Small groups are perfect for food tours. It’s so much more fun to compare what you think of this food and that food with a few other people, and honestly, that’s half the experience. The same goes for most walking tours. You’re outside, there’s more room, and having a few other people along just makes it more fun.
And there are some things in Paris you don’t need a guide for at all. You don’t need one to walk along the Seine, of course, or to shop in the Marais. You can book one if you want, but I don’t know that you need it.

What It Costs: Private Guide in Paris vs Small Group Tour
A private guide for a group of four is usually somewhere between $500 and $700 for a three-hour tour. When you split that four ways, it’s often less than people expect. Food tours are usually about $150 per person, maybe $175 depending on the tour, and that’s for a small group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a private guide in Paris worth the cost?
Inside a museum, I really think it is. You can hear your guide, ask questions and get close to the art. For a group of four, you’re usually looking at $500 to $700 for about three hours.
Which Paris museums are worth a private guide?
I always book one for the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and Versailles. They’re big, they’re busy, and there’s so much history you’d miss on your own.
Are small group tours in Paris worth it?
For food tours and walking tours, absolutely. It’s so much more fun to compare notes with a few other people.
How much is a food tour in Paris?
Most small-group food tours are about $150 to $175 per person.
Do I need a guide for everything in Paris?
No, not at all. A walk along the Seine or an afternoon shopping in the Marais is much better on your own time.
