Two Luxury Hotels in Provence I Would Happily Return To and Who I’d Recommend Them For

September 23, 2026

Provence has no shortage of beautiful luxury hotels. But after years of traveling through France, I’ve learned that choosing the right property involves much more than finding a gorgeous room.

During my recent trip to Provence, I stayed at two exceptional hotels: Coquillade Provence and Couvent des Minimes. Both offered beautiful surroundings, impeccable service, and plenty of reasons to linger a little longer. Yet their personalities couldn’t have been more different.

As a France travel specialist, I regularly visit hotels to experience them firsthand. I want to understand how a property feels, what makes it special, and which travelers would enjoy it most.

After staying at both hotels in September 2026, I would happily return to either one. Here’s what I loved about each property and who I would recommend them to.

Gardens at La Coquillade

La Coquillade Provence: Contemporary Luxury in the Luberon

From the moment we drove up La Coquillade’s cypress-lined driveway, I knew we were somewhere special. Perched on a hill overlooking the Luberon countryside, the property features impeccable grounds, terraced gardens, and vineyards stretching toward the mountains.

La Coquillade has a contemporary, stylish atmosphere that feels a little more glamorous than traditional Provence luxury hotels. Beautifully curated art adds personality throughout the property, while the design feels sophisticated without being overly formal. Even our arrival felt special, with a refreshing ginger tea waiting to welcome us.

There is a youthful energy here, along with a playful sense of style that never feels flashy or overdone. Everything is beautifully considered, from the landscaping to the contemporary artwork and inviting outdoor spaces.

Our Junior Suite at Coquillade

We stayed in a junior suite with an enormous terrace overlooking the vineyards, mountains, and distant hilltop villages. Our bed faced the windows, giving us a beautiful view of the countryside from the moment we woke up. I particularly loved watching the sunrise over the vineyards each morning. As the sunlight reached the perched villages in the distance, the buildings seemed to glow against the surrounding landscape.

The suite featured a beautiful bathtub, lovely amenities, and in-room coffee. Since we were celebrating my birthday, the hotel also left a thoughtful gift and a half bottle of its estate-produced wine.

One practical detail worth mentioning is that we encountered mosquitoes during our September stay. The hotel provided an organic mosquito spray, which guests were welcome to take with them.

For travelers who appreciate beautiful views and private outdoor space, I would consider booking a room category with a terrace. Ours added considerably to our enjoyment of the property.

Food, Wine, and the Flavors of Provence

Food and wine were highlights of our stay, beginning with a fantastic alfresco dinner on our first evening. We also enjoyed lovely breakfasts and had plenty of opportunities to sample the hotel’s estate-produced wines.

La Coquillade produces both white and rosé wines, and I particularly enjoyed the white. The rosé was equally memorable, with more depth and body than many of the Provence rosés I typically encounter at home. The hotel’s kitchen garden supplies fresh produce for its restaurants, and the attention to detail extends to the presentation of each dish. Beautiful vegetables, fresh herbs, and edible flowers brought the flavors of Provence to our table.

Throughout the property, rosemary, lavender, sage, and thyme grow among the landscaping. Their fragrances are everywhere, adding another dimension to the experience of being in Provence.

For travelers who enjoy food and wine, I would recommend allowing time to dine at the property. The vineyards, kitchen garden, and restaurants make the culinary experience an important part of the stay.

Two Pools and Plenty of Room to Relax

La Coquillade has two distinct pool areas, which help the property accommodate different types of travelers. One is more family-oriented, while the other features an extraordinary five-lane lap pool with an elegant waterfall feature. It was one of the most impressive hotel pools I have experienced, and I made a point of enjoying it whenever possible. After cycling through the Luberon in the September heat, the refreshing water felt fantastic.

The poolside bar and restaurant created a welcoming atmosphere, with attentive staff and a friendly manager who shared local recommendations. I enjoyed the local rosé by the pool, although the cocktails also appeared popular with other guests.

La Coquillade also has a spa, but I didn’t experience its treatments or facilities during this visit. Our cycling itinerary kept me busy, and I preferred to spend my downtime enjoying the pools.

Who Would I Recommend La Coquillade To?

I would happily return to La Coquillade and recommend considering a stay of two or three nights. Its contemporary design, vineyard views, excellent dining, and beautiful pools make it particularly appealing for couples seeking a romantic escape.

The property also works well for families, with connecting rooms, a children’s area, and plenty of outdoor space. The family-oriented pool provides a separate environment from the more adult-focused lap pool, allowing different travelers to enjoy the property in their own way.

I experienced La Coquillade as part of a Backroads cycling trip, and it worked beautifully with our active itinerary. However, I would also consider the property for travelers planning a more relaxed Provence vacation.

Couvent des Minimes: Understated Luxury in Mane

Couvent des Minimes offers a very different interpretation of luxury. Where La Coquillade feels contemporary and glamorous, Couvent des Minimes is quietly elegant, with an understated atmosphere that immediately encourages you to slow down. The attention to detail is impeccable, but nothing feels unnecessarily showy. I met the owner several years ago at Virtuoso Travel Week and remember his stylish, understated manner. During my stay, I felt that the property reflected this same aesthetic.

The grounds are gorgeous, and the entire hotel has a calm, refined atmosphere. Yet the service never feels stiff or overly formal, with warm, personable staff and plenty of smiles and laughter throughout our stay.

I particularly appreciated this balance between exceptional service and genuine hospitality. The hotel delivers a luxurious experience without making guests feel that they need to behave a certain way to enjoy it.

A Spa Worth Making Time For

The spa was one of the highlights of my stay, and I would make time for it when planning a visit.

Its extensive facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a cold plunge, and a sensory shower. The sensory shower was particularly memorable, with a playful quality that contrasted with the hotel’s otherwise understated atmosphere.

I also enjoyed a facial during my stay. Although the property has a connection to L’Occitane, the products used during my treatment were from another skincare line.

With so many facilities to enjoy, I would recommend setting aside an afternoon for the spa rather than squeezing in a treatment between sightseeing excursions. The experience deserves time, especially for travelers who appreciate a little relaxation during their vacation.

Who Would I Recommend Couvent des Minimes To?

I would consider Couvent des Minimes for travelers seeking a peaceful countryside retreat with exceptional spa facilities and understated luxury. The property is particularly appealing for couples who want time to relax, enjoy beautiful surroundings, and experience attentive service without an overly formal atmosphere.

For clients planning a busy sightseeing itinerary, I would discuss how much time they intend to spend at the hotel. A property like this deserves more than a quick overnight stay, especially if you want to enjoy the spa and grounds.

Coquillade or Couvent des Minimes: Which Provence Hotel Is Right for Your Trip?

Both properties offer beautiful surroundings, attentive service, and an opportunity to experience Provence beyond its famous villages and markets. However, their personalities and facilities create different experiences.

Your travel styleWhat I would consider
A family vacationCoquillade offers connecting rooms, a family pool, a children’s area, and extensive outdoor space.
A romantic escapeCoquillade offers contemporary luxury, vineyard views, beautiful pools, and outdoor dining.
A spa-focused vacationCouvent des Minimes impressed me with its extensive spa facilities and peaceful atmosphere.
An active vacationCoquillade worked beautifully as the base for my Backroads cycling trip through the Luberon.
A quiet countryside retreatCouvent des Minimes offers understated elegance, warm service, and beautiful grounds.
A culinary-focused stayCoquillade’s estate-produced wines, kitchen garden, and memorable dining were highlights of my visit.

When recommending a hotel, I consider how my clients want to spend their time and what matters most to them. A family planning several days of exploring the Luberon might appreciate Coquillade’s range of facilities, while a couple seeking a peaceful spa retreat might prefer the atmosphere at Couvent des Minimes.

Both properties deserve consideration, but the right choice depends on the experience you want.

How I Would Incorporate These Hotels Into a Provence Itinerary

One of the most important decisions when planning a Provence vacation is choosing where to base yourself. The region covers a considerable area, and travel times between destinations can affect how much you enjoy each day.

I consider the location of your hotel alongside the villages, restaurants, wineries, and experiences you want to include. I also look at how much time you’ll realistically have to enjoy the property itself.

For Coquillade, I would suggest considering two or three nights in the Luberon. This allows time to explore the surrounding countryside while enjoying the hotel’s pools, restaurants, and vineyard setting.

At Couvent des Minimes, I would make the spa an intentional part of the itinerary. Rather than filling every day with sightseeing, I would reserve time to enjoy the property itself.

Transportation also deserves consideration, particularly when staying at a countryside hotel. A rental car offers flexibility when exploring Provence, while private drivers and guided excursions provide alternatives for travelers who prefer not to drive.

The right combination of accommodations, transportation, and experiences can make a significant difference in how you enjoy the region.

Frequently Asked Questions About Luxury Hotels in Provence

1. Where should I stay in Provence for a luxury vacation?

The right location depends on which parts of Provence you want to explore. Coquillade offers a vineyard setting in the Luberon, while Couvent des Minimes provides a peaceful retreat in Mane. I recommend choosing your hotel based on your planned activities, transportation arrangements, and preferred pace.

2. Is Coquillade Provence suitable for families?

Yes. During my stay, I found that Coquillade offered several features that make it appealing for families, including connecting rooms, a family-oriented pool, a children’s area, and extensive outdoor space. Families should confirm the available room configurations and age-appropriate facilities when booking.

3. Is Coquillade a good choice for couples traveling without children?

Yes. Although Coquillade welcomes families, its more adult-oriented lap pool offers a separate environment for couples and solo travelers. I particularly enjoyed this pool area, along with the vineyard views, outdoor dining, and contemporary atmosphere.

4. Is Couvent des Minimes worth visiting for its spa?

The spa was one of the highlights of my September 2026 stay. Its extensive facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a cold plunge, and a sensory shower. I recommend allowing enough time to enjoy the spa rather than fitting a treatment between sightseeing activities.

5. How many nights should I stay at a luxury hotel in Provence?

I recommend considering at least two or three nights at a countryside resort, depending on your overall itinerary. This allows time to explore the surrounding region while enjoying the hotel’s restaurants, pools, and other facilities. Travelers planning extensive sightseeing may benefit from a longer stay.

6. Do I need a rental car when staying at Coquillade or Couvent des Minimes?

A rental car provides flexibility for exploring Provence’s villages, markets, and countryside. However, private drivers and guided excursions offer alternatives for travelers who prefer not to drive. I recommend arranging transportation according to your hotel’s location and planned activities.
